About the race
Saratoga's premier older-horse handicap. The bridge from spring and summer campaigns to the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Race history
First run in 1928, named after William C. Whitney. The Whitney has a pattern of being the make-or-break race for older horses pointing toward the BC Classic. A strong Whitney almost always means a Classic mention; a flop puts the Classic dream in doubt.

What sharps watch for
- 01
Strong predictor for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Whitney winners regularly run well in November.
- 02
Field is small, typically 6 to 8, and elite. There's no value in deep handicapping; bet the form.
- 03
Pace duels are common when two or three speed types show up, opening the door for closers.

Where to bet the The Whitney
US pari-mutuel wagering happens through licensed operators. TVG (FanDuel-owned) and TwinSpires (Churchill Downs) are the two largest dedicated US racing platforms; both ship win/place/show plus the full exotic ladder (exacta, trifecta, superfecta, daily double, Pick 3/4/6) at the Saratoga Race Course meeting.
